House Painting That Lasts: The Texas-Proof Way We Prep, Paint, and Protect Your Home's Exterior

A GREAT EXTERIOR PAINT JOB STARTS BEFORE THE FIRST BRUSHSTROKE.
Texas sun is tough on a home’s exterior. Heat, UV exposure, windblown dust, and sudden storms can wear down paint, and when the surface underneath isn’t ready, a new coat may start peeling far sooner than you expect. At Grizzly Fence and Patio, I believe the difference between a quick cosmetic refresh and a lasting finish comes down to careful preparation, the right materials, and workmanship that respects the whole exterior.
My team brings more than 15 years of experience to outdoor and exterior projects across DFW. We work closely with you, assess the condition of the surfaces, and recommend a practical plan, whether that means a full exterior repaint or painting specific areas after repairs or siding replacement.
The secret to a lasting finish? Prep work.
Paint cannot make a dirty, loose, or damaged surface sound. That’s why we begin by looking closely at the home: identifying peeling or chalky paint, open seams, failed caulk, exposed wood, and areas that may need repair before they’re painted.
Then we prepare the surfaces included in the project. Depending on the material and its condition, that can include power washing to remove dirt and loose contaminants, scraping and sanding failing paint, and letting the exterior dry thoroughly before coating. Sherwin-Williams likewise emphasizes that a clean, dry, sound surface is essential for coating adhesion in its surface preparation guidance.
We also address joints and gaps where appropriate with exterior-grade, paintable caulk. At soffit vents, that means sealing gaps around the vent trim, not blocking the openings that allow attic ventilation. Small details matter, and the right repair should protect your home without interfering with how it’s designed to function.

Scrape, repair, and prime where the surface needs it
After washing and drying, we scrape loose paint and smooth rough edges where needed. Bare or repaired areas may need a compatible primer to support adhesion and create a more even base for the finish coat. On new HardiePlank and other fiber-cement siding, the preparation and coating system should match the product requirements and the condition of the surface.
Not every home needs the same repairs. If trim or siding is deteriorated, we assess whether a targeted repair can solve the problem before recommending replacement. I’d rather give you an honest assessment than steer you toward work you don’t need.
Spray application, with back-rolling when it makes sense
Spraying helps us apply paint efficiently and achieve an even finish across large exterior surfaces. But spraying alone isn’t always the best approach for every substrate. On textured or porous siding, we may follow the spray application with back-rolling or back-brushing while the paint is workable. This presses the coating into the surface and helps provide more consistent coverage.
Trim, edges, doors, and detailed areas receive the attention their shapes require. We also protect nearby windows, doors, landscaping, walkways, and other surfaces before painting begins. The goal is a clean, uniform result, not simply getting paint onto the walls quickly.

Color matching after siding or trim replacement
A repair can leave a visible patch if the new section stands out from the rest of the home. When we replace siding or trim, we can help select a paint color intended to blend with the existing exterior. We’ll consider the current color, the surrounding materials, and how the repaired area fits into the overall look.
One honest note: sun exposure and weathering change existing paint over time, so an exact match cannot always be guaranteed. Painting a larger section, or, in some cases, the full elevation, may create a more consistent appearance. We’ll talk through the options so you can make an informed choice.
We also paint newly installed HardiePlank siding, helping bring the new work together with the rest of the exterior. For product-specific preparation and painting advice, see Sherwin-Williams’ exterior painting guide.
More than a full-house repaint
Exterior painting doesn’t have to mean repainting every wall. Depending on your project, our team can paint:
- Full home exteriors
- Fascia and soffits
- Entry, garage-entry, balcony, and French doors
- Sheds and exterior pillars
- New or replaced siding and trim
That range fits the way we work as a general contractor. The same team that builds cedar fences, patio covers, and pergolas also takes on siding and exterior painting projects. You can work with one company to coordinate connected improvements and create a more finished look across your property. Explore our services to see more of what we do.
How long should exterior paint last in Texas?
There’s no single number that applies to every home. Paint life depends on the surface, the quality and compatibility of the products, the preparation, the home’s exposure, and how well water is managed around the exterior. Sherwin-Williams gives a general estimate of about 7–10 years for exterior paint, while noting that conditions and materials affect the result in its exterior painting guide.
In North Texas, the sun-facing sides of a home may show wear sooner than sheltered areas. Strong preparation and quality exterior coatings can help a paint job stand up better, but no contractor can promise a precise lifespan for every home. I focus on doing the work carefully, using premium products such as Sherwin-Williams when appropriate, and helping you understand what your specific exterior needs.
